First 5: The introduction, the artist.

The First 5 series will highlight five distinctive artists from different mediums that have been confirmed for the 36th Annual Totah Festival & Indian Market. This series will feature a brief introduction to the artist and their art. The artist featured were simply - the first five to be attending this year's market. In this week's feature, we would like to take the opportunity to introduce our second artist of the series, Mr. Coeburn Palmer.

Coeburn Palmer (Booth No. 5 | Navajo (Diné)

"I try to pay homage to the natural world and convey it's beauty through my jewelry."

Palmer, entering his second year with us at the Totah Festival & Indian Market, a vibrant and skilled artist began his journey in the summer of 2013 and reflects how fortunate he was to learn the art from his uncle as a silversmith. Originally from Whiterock, New Mexico now residing in a small homestead in Hogback, New Mexico links his artistry to elements of the natural world. From plants, to insects, cosmology, and to Diné traditional beliefs, all have an existence within his jewelry. Mr. Palmer considers his art form as simple and contemporary. When asked about his experience with the festival, “I enjoy meeting fellow artists and art admires alike. It is a very positive space that displays native lifeways as an expression through art.” We look forward to seeing what he has in store for this year’s festival.
